FRUIT BOWLS
Baltic birch plywood
The fruit bowl series was designed in Rhino. From the 3D CAD file, it was a simple process to unroll the curved surfaces of the individual elements and lay them out for CNC machining.
In the machining layout (left), you can see the slots to be cut into each element. My hope was that the whole assembly would nicely snap together.
It did not.
Each of the curved cross braces needed to be soaked in water (with a small amount of bleach to repel mold), and then placed in purpose-machined forms (made from the remains of an old CNC mill spoil board) and allowed to dry. Even then, the assembly was disinclined to fit together and hold long enough to be glued.
In the end, I also had to devise and machine a jig to hold the main beams in place while the cross braces were glued in.
